Advocacy: McGregor Fund
Annually, in Wayne County alone 4,000 children are in temporary state custody and 3,000 children are placed in permanent custody. Despite the efforts of committed child welfare leaders, the prospects for these children are troubling. For the past thirty years, child welfare policy has focused on minimizing harm to children already in foster care, rather than preventing their entry into state care. This is why the Detroit Center for Family Advocacy offers a combination of preventive legal advocacy and the assistance of social workers before a parent’s hard time results in the break-up of a family. The McGregor Fund made a two-year commitment to the Detroit Center for Family Advocacy to support the program in its nascent years.
